To promote awareness, understanding and the protection of the Peruvian wildlife and habitats through discovery, education, research, and the captive propagation of flora and fauna.
Zoo Peru Inc. is a charitable, non-profit organization with offices in Auburn, California, Perth, Australia and Iquitos, Peru. The project has been working closely with political figures, vets, zoos and animal workers in the Amazon, improving conditions for animals kept in zoos, assisting in the protection of wildlife and education of vets, communities, students and tourists, and administering alternatives for indigenous and endangered animals rescued from black market traders or intolerable cruelty.
Zoo Peru has so far worked to improve conditions, care & exhibits at the Quistococha Zoo in the Amazon. They have provided veterinary supplies, longterm employment for Peruvian keepers, welders, locals & government officials, as well as creating education projects & a dedicated learning centre.
Team members from Zoo Peru have handraised 100's of orphaned local species of fauna including such species as the jaguar, giant otter, silky anteater and sloths.
The increasing devastation of Amazon wildlife and wilderness, and the global impact of deforestation and climate change have sharpened our focus in th region, and highlighted the urgent need for conservation. The protection of intact, old growth habitats is not only vital for the survival of their indigenous species, but contributes to balance our In 2007 it is our desire to create a sanctuary dedicated to the preservation of the eco-structure contained within the Peruvian rainforest; an oasis where flora & fauna indigenous to the Amazon rainforest can thrive & flourish, undisturbed by visitors.
This project would become the first wild Animal Rescue, Rehabilitation, Research and Release Centre in the Amazon – a repository for animals confiscated from smugglers and traders by government, a haven for wildlife from ants and lichen, to jaguars and monkeys and a unique learning, training and research environment.
Zoo Peru shall achieve its mission with supporting partners from around the world, including zoos, wildlife experts, philanthropists, organizations and individuals, & by teaching & practicing conservation, contributing to the discovery of biological knowledge, & instilling a sense of discovery, awareness and stewardship, while maintaining ties between the indigenous peoples and their natural world
The cost of purchasing sufficient land – approximately 300 acres – is US$ 55, 000.
This is the legacy Girls on Top hope to leave through our expedition this year.
