If you ever wanted to make an impact on this planet the time is now. Remember that there is a big difference between knowing the path and walking the path - together we can do both.
Global Warming is the biggest natural threat the world has ever faced. It has been estimated, for example, that with even a one degree rise in temperature at the equator would result in a six degree rise in temperature at the poles (North and South). This would result in massive melting of land-based polar ice and a global rise of our oceans. This alone would destroy coastal ecosystems and in turn alter the face of our planet. Even before these massive changes occur, smaller ecosystems and the species they support are losing the balance. The effects are obvious in the Amazon where rainfall changes, decreased flow through the Amazon, irratic temperatures and seasonal shifts are compounding the other problems of massive deforestation, pollution and wildlife poaching.
Another example a little closer to home, is the real and current impact of global warming on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. Here our precious reef is quickly dying through a process known as "Coral Bleaching". Here the coral polyps which make up the frame work of the reef are dying through a rise in sea-water temperature and whole marine ecosystems are now collapsing.
So,what can we do and how does Girls on Top and Zoo Peru fit in?
Zoo Peru's long term goal, starting this year (2007) is to purchase large tracks of intact Amazon rainforest habitat to protect it from deforestation and poaching. This would help 'lock down' carbon from the atmosphere of all of the plants that remove from the world market. It would give us direct means to protect tracts of permanent old growth forest from logging and burning and provide safe babitat for the unique flora and fauna dependent on this wilderness. The purchase of such habitat by conservation teams with an active involvement in their preservation and care is a direct way to ensure the survival of rainforest and everything within it - a delicate framework of biodiversity to which we are all linked and dependant upon, together.
The purchase of rainforest habitat will provide a base for a future Animal Rescue, Rehabilation and Rescue Centre with the Amazon Basin. Here we hope to provide a natural sanctuary for fauna that confiscated from poachers by the Environmental Police and, where possible, rehabilitate these animals back into the wild through a joint community project.
But, we can't do this alone. We need your help ! By supporting us in our fund raising and education mission this year, YOU can make an impact MUCH GREATER than you imagine. This project is a way you can make a difference, preserve a natural wonder and take a stand to protect the balance here on Earth AT THE SOURCE !
Getting involved is easy - support a Girls on Top event, make a donation, buy a T-shirt, get in touch. ALL of the funds we raise go DIRECTLY to our project in the Amazon.
