My Journey
I head up a creative agency within an online portal, ninemsn. I work with a team of 12 people creating online and mobile marketing campaigns. I love technology and specifically people’s behaviour with it. I am driven by thinking about and understanding how and if these new technologies (although not so new now) such as the internet and mobile phones are changing the way we communicate. I love working in an industry that is so dynamic and at the forefront of change and innovation.

I manage this team and was quite new to people management when I came to the job. My learning curve has been steep but the most fulfilling part of the job is caring about each individual’s development, motivation and working with them to define the working environment in which we all want to work.

In 2003 I completed an honours thesis in the sociology of the mobile phone and plan to return to academia at some point for a PhD or further study. My innate curiosity in understanding the world in which we live sets me up for a keen interest in research, whether it is formal or anecdotal personal observation.

I am also driven by filling my life with all the experiences that are fortunately available to me. I think about what it will be like to be 60 and how I will reflect on my life. It makes for a packed time… I have a annual subscription to one of the theatres in Sydney, I learnt how to surf last summer; I do yoga and run and bushwalk; try to see live music at least 1-2 times a month; I’ve just started singing lessons… I hate the idea of missing out! And there’s so much to do in this lifetime. I have lived overseas for almost 6 years in the ‘90s (gosh that seems like such a long time ago) and travel has remained a constant passion, to be indulged at every opportunity.

I am forever striving to do things better or smarter and learn about myself; evolve my emotional maturity. And I try to come from the point of view that, even in the leadership position I am now in, we all have something to learn from those around us. I also see this as one of the biggest opportunities from Girls on Top in meeting team mates and especially people from other cultures.

Conversation, connections, learning and personal experience make up the richest experiences to me. I am in love with my family and friends… I collect them from all the various experiences I have throughout life.

After spending a considerable amount of time pondering it… I think the meaning of life to be travel, a great love and the people in your life. Above all I consider myself a humanist, forever striving to be empathetic and investing in personal relationships.

And now that I’ve spent an extended period talking about me… now on to what I am seeking from Girls on Top.

It’s important to me to find meaning and purpose as an individual and an investment in community provides that meaning and purpose. My 9-5 job does not directly provide this so each year I look for an opportunity outside of work that will allow me to give back to the larger community. Girls on Top represents an opportunity for me to do this; to contribute to people and the environment.

This program represents a chance to contribute by helping to make change and inspire others to achieve beyond their potential. But also to learn more about other people’s challenges as well as the challenges we face in the environment, and to act in overcoming these.

It also has the benefit of being able to personally challenge myself physically, mentally and culturally. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about myself and those around me in situations we might not normally find ourselves (fundraising and the like).

Over the past couple of years I have come to learn more about Australia’s Indigenous culture. I am so keen to learn more and contribute to a more positive outcome for Indigenous Australia. Working with the Indigenous community is a key drawcard for me of Girls on Top.

The size of the personal investment in Girls on Top appeals to more – I like the idea of committing time, energy and passion as it is guaranteed to mean greater reward.

What I would bring to the team:

A sense of fun! Determination, an insatiable curiosity for other cultures, a passion for learning; an enjoyment of endurance events and the challenge to yourself that comes with them; a commitment to developing myself and relationships with others; experience in fostering a team environment; a humility to learn from the other gals on the team and the people that we come in to contact with throughout the Girls on Top journey.

My Motto
Life is too important to take too seriously

If I could only take 3 items, they’d be:

Pen and paper
Swiss army knife
UV water filter
